Reading IndyCar Restart Telemetry Under the Push to Pass Rule Change

A black-and-white open-wheel racing car rounds a street-circuit corner, with blue-and-yellow and orange cars behind it beside barriers and catch fencing.

Telemetry timing versus sporting regulations

When analysing telemetry traces from road and street course restarts following IndyCar's May 2026 rule update, analysts must separate engine boost activation from the sporting allowance to overtake. Understanding when can IndyCar drivers use push to pass on restarts comes down to two mandatory triggers: the green flag must be displayed, and the car must physically cross the alternate start-finish line. Even if engine logs show the additional 60 horsepower being deployed immediately upon crossing that threshold, passing before the designated restart line remains strictly prohibited. An increase in manifold pressure at that exact coordinate indicates permitted system activation, not an authorization to execute an overtake prior to the regulation line.

Interpreting throttle and boost traces on cold tyres

Data showing button engagement right at the alternate line does not automatically produce an immediate speed advantage. Telemetry can reveal heavy wheelspin or delayed full-throttle application on cold tyres, meaning additional turbo boost may show up as wheel speed spikes rather than a cleaner acceleration curve. Furthermore, drivers and analysts must view speed deltas with caution because rivals have access to the exact same deployment window, which can flatten net gains on straight-line traces.

Budget tracking across stints

Because total boost duration and single-activation limits were retained without any extra allocation granted for restarts, telemetry budgets require deeper context. An analyst tracking a car's declining push-to-pass balance cannot assume conservation on in-laps or out-laps reflects pace management alone; drivers must reserve seconds for potential late-race restarts where defensive or offensive deployment becomes critical.
